Today, Bang Niang Beach is a rugged stretch of coastline in Khao Lak, shaped by nature. Those looking for an unspoiled, picture-perfect idyll are often taken aback at first glance: the beach has been suffering from severe coastal erosion for years. Large sandbags, rock fill, and concrete walls dominate much of the backdrop, protecting the infrastructure behind them from the waves. Combined with the abandoned foundations and ruins of earlier structures that had to yield to the power of the sea, the beach takes on an almost melancholic, makeshift character in many places.
