Entering Thailand: The Most Important Information at a Glance
Your dream vacation in Khao Lak is calling, and to ensure you can glide into paradise without any hitches, here are the absolute basics for your entry. It’s really easier than you might think, but a few things are essential.
The most important thing is your passport. It must be valid for at least 6 months when you enter Thailand. This isn’t just a recommendation—it’s a strict rule enforced by Thai immigration authorities. So be sure to double-check the date! Without a passport that’s valid for a sufficient period, you may be denied entry—and we definitely want to avoid that.
Equally important is proof that you’ll be leaving Thailand again. So be sure to have your return or onward flight ticket ready. The airline will often check this before departure, and immigration officials in Thailand may ask to see it. It serves as proof that you do not plan to stay in the country longer than permitted.
How long can you currently stay in Thailand without a visa?
For German citizens, entering Thailand by air for tourism purposes is pleasantly straightforward. You benefit from the so-called “visa exemption”, which means you do not need to apply for a visa in advance for a certain period of time.
Current rules: Until May 31, 2024, German citizens may stay in the country visa-free for 45 days. And here’s some fantastic news: Starting June 1, 2024, this period will be extended to an incredible 60 days! This gives you even more freedom to explore Thailand and our beautiful Khao Lak region to your heart’s content without having to worry about extensions right away.
If your Khao Lak adventure ends up lasting longer than these 45 or 60 days (which we can certainly understand!), you have the option to extend your stay once while you’re there. You can do this at the Immigration Office, for example in Phuket, Ranong, or other major cities. There, you can apply for an extension of another 30 days. Set aside a little time for this and have the required documents (passport, passport photos, fee) ready. The cost is currently 1,900 baht.
Staying Longer: Applying for the Thai E-Visa
For anyone who falls in love with Thailand and wants to stay longer—whether as a winter visitor, a long-term traveler, or for other reasons that go beyond visa-free entry—the Thai E-Visa is the right choice. This applies to stays longer than the 45 or 60 days allowed under the visa exemption.
The big advantage: The entire visa process is fully digital! You no longer have to visit the embassy or a consulate in person. You can upload all the required documents and submit your application from the comfort of your own home. Be sure to provide all information accurately and completely to avoid delays. Processing times may vary, so be sure to apply for your e-visa well in advance of your planned departure.

This means you can enter all the required information before your departure or even while relaxing on the plane using your smartphone or tablet.
